What do protection ratings mean?

4 minutos

Our chargers are water and dust resistant and have IP54 and IK08 protection ratings, (IP54 and IK10 for our Commander 2 charger) allowing safe installation indoors and outdoors.

Our chargers are designed and manufactured in Europe. They are built to last and are covered by our two year warranty.

Both IP and IK ratings are European standard, internationally recognized ratings.

IP ratings

IP ratings, known as ingress protection ratings, are a standard rating certifying the degree to which an installation is effectively sealed and protected from external elements such as dirt, dust and moisture.

The rating is made up of two letters (IP) followed by two digits.

The first digit signifies the installation’s intrusion protection rating (against solid objects)

The second digit signifies its capacity to protect against moisture.

Both digits are on a scale of 0–6.

So, IP54:

Intrusion protection rating of 5 – protected against dust, limited ingress permitted and no harmful deposits.

Moisture protection rating of 4 – protected against water splashed from all directions, limited ingress permitted.

IK ratings

IK ratings, known as impact protection ratings, are a standard rating certifying the degree to which an installation is protected from external mechanical impacts. The ratings are a way of specifying the protective capacity of the installation.

So:

IK08 – protected against 5 joules of impact (the equivalent to the impact of a 1.7kg mass dropped from 300mm above the impacted surface).

Cold weather protection

Wallbox chargers are also built to withstand extreme temperatures. So for EV drivers in colder climates who will be driving an EV in cold temperatures, investing in an all-weather indoor/outdoor charger makes sense.
